Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to question specific rulings made by the official, following the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
