Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
