They're Doing to America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and defining occasions – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing to construct it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to USAID amounts to 600,000 and growing, and this week an analysis forecast his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have dared – really, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying large sections of the White House in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the world' to 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As confusing as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into a symbol of hate who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this change developed more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and given that the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense about him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of great price within Christian narrative.

It is emphatically not the story of a powerful ruler arising; conversely, a baby is born to displaced parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to another nation to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for fellow humans, especially for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his method regarding offenses indicates that whenever someone steals your outer garment you ought to provide him your sweater as well.

The evident and straightforward fact that Christ of the gospels requests a kind of profound affection focused on the needy has perpetually caused Christianity something of a controversial faith: attractive to the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be contained. During the 1950s it was contained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Best Among Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump develop during the previous year. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to continue it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you welcome them and welcome him or reject?

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the highest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by relationship to what makes it unique and beautiful, which is the example of Jesus. In neither case does it mean pretending the worst about the nation and religious tradition did not happen; it represents both modesty and conviction, a blend that genuine national faithful ought to accept.
