Seven alleged individuals of German far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
