The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
