Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
